Riverside Accommodation near Shaldon
Gated access onto the river from the garden allows launching of canoes, windsurfers, rowing boats and other small water craft and thus water sports can be enjoyed directly from the property, tides permitting. There is a slipway about 200m upriver for launching larger boats, in addition to a number of slipways in Shaldon and Teignmouth. Direct passage to the sea is possible from the property, tides permitting. It is worth noting that jet skis are not permitted on the River Teign. A mooring on the river can be arranged with prior notice, but it should be noted that the river outside Clare Park is tidal and access is restricted to approximately three hours either side of high tide.
The river is ideal for sailing, canoeing, waterskiing (permit required), and rowing. In fact almost any water sport can be enjoyed right in front of Clare Park and for those who require the open sea for their nautical enjoyment, this is easily accessible about 2km down river.
At low tide, it is possible to walk along the river foreshore as far east as Shaldon and as far west as Newton Abbot. There are then many routes to follow from either of these places, as near or as far afield as you are able and inclined! In addition, there are many public footpaths and green lanes which wend their way around the village and surrounding rural area.
As the river Teign is tidal there is a never ending display of bird life outside Clare Park. A large flock of swans is resident for part of the year, mallards, shelducks, herons, egrets, curlews, oyster catchers, kingfishers, cormorants and shags.
In addition, there are occasionally visiting seals that come up the river and can be seen popping their heads up for a look around; you may be lucky enough to see them. Slightly further afield, out to sea, there are frequently dolphins to be seen in summer; these are often happy to perform antics around the boats just a few hundred metres from the mouth of the river.
